Teaming Up for Trust & Safety: Zoom Joins 3 Additional Coalitions

There’s no “I” in “team,” especially when it comes to working on online safety. 

Leading trust & safety teams have to expand how — and with whom — they solve today’s challenges, especially as we face an increasingly complex digital landscape. 

We know we’re stronger when we work with the wider community on online safety issues, which is why we continue to expand the list of groups and coalitions we’re part of. Today, we’re excited to announce three new internet safety initiatives we’ve joined:

The Christchurch Call is an action plan comprised of twenty-four voluntary commitments designed to help eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content (TVEC) online. It is named for the New Zealand city that experienced a major terrorist attack in 2019, which was designed for the internet and livestreamed to a global audience. Following the devastating attack, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron brought heads of governments and tech leaders together to adopt the Christchurch Call. It is a multistakeholder initiative that encourages engagement with civil society.

Our team is honored to carry out the Call’s goals, including: 

• Developing innovative tools
• Countering the roots of terrorism and violent extremism
• Increasing transparency around the removal and detection of TVEC
• Reviewing how algorithmic processes may direct users to terrorist or violent extremist content

The Tech Coalition is a Washington D.C.-based, non-profit membership organization focused on promoting internet safety and combating child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA) online. 

By becoming part of this alliance, we’re joining a growing list of global tech companies that are working together to combat CSEA. The Tech Coalition provides exclusive resources, events, and peer-to-peer mentoring to its members to strengthen the way we use technology to help achieve our collective goal of eliminating CSEA.

As a member of the Tech Coalition, we hope to do our part in tackling this pervasive issue and keeping the internet a safe place for kids everywhere. 

A first-of-its-kind initiative, the Digital Trust & Safety Partnership (DTSP) is “committed to developing industry best practices, verified through internal and independent third-party assessments, to ensure consumer trust and safety when using digital services.” 

In joining the Digital Trust & Safety Partnership, we’ve agreed to five fundamental commitments that a digital service should make to promote a safer and more trustworthy internet. In addition to developing and promoting trust & safety best practices, we will also work with other partners to release a recommended framework informed by industry experience and to engage with civil society, policymakers, and other experts.  

We always want to evolve how we approach online threats — that’s why we’re excited to work with the Christchurch Call, Tech Coalition, Digital Trust & Safety Partnership, and future organizations that will help us make the internet a safer place. 

We know there’s always more work to do, but we’re ready to tackle these challenges head-on, together.
