Overview
Explore number patterns, visual sequences, and algebraic thinking with this interactive patterns template. Designed for elementary through middle school mathematics, this canvas supports identifying, extending, and creating patterns — building the foundational thinking skills that lead to algebraic reasoning.
Key Features
- Visual pattern sequences with student extension zones
- Number pattern tables with fill-in rows
- Pattern rule identification section
- Growing and repeating pattern examples
- Student-created pattern canvas for open exploration
How to Use
- Display a visual or number pattern in the example frame — use shapes and sticky notes to represent each term in the sequence
- Ask students to identify the pattern rule and write it in the rule section using the Text tool
- Have students extend the pattern by adding the next 3–5 terms to the extension zone using Quick Actions
- Move to the student creation zone — each student designs their own pattern using shapes, colors, and numbers
- Students share their patterns with a partner who must identify the rule and extend it — use the Comments tool to give feedback
Benefits
Pattern recognition is the cognitive foundation of algebra. Students who can identify, extend, and articulate a rule are already thinking algebraically — even before they see a variable.
