Overview
Analyze and align your organization using McKinsey's 7S Framework — a tool for assessing the seven interdependent elements that determine organizational effectiveness: Strategy, Structure, Systems, Shared Values, Skills, Style, and Staff. This template provides a visual canvas for mapping current state, identifying misalignments, and planning change.
Key Features
- Seven-element spider diagram with central Shared Values hub
- Current state and target state fields per element
- Gap identification zone for flagging misalignments between elements
- Priority action section for addressing the most critical gaps
- Color coding to distinguish strong alignment from weak alignment
How to Use
- Work through each of the seven elements — use sticky notes to capture current state observations in the corresponding section
- For each element, add a target state description using the Text tool to define where the organization needs to be
- Identify gaps between current and target using a different colored sticky note — where are the biggest misalignments?
- Draw connector lines between elements that are misaligned to show which interdependencies are most at risk
- Use dot voting to prioritize the most critical gaps to address first — move top items to the action section with owners
Benefits
Most organizational change initiatives fail because they fix one element without accounting for its effect on the others. The 7S model makes the interdependencies visible — so change plans are comprehensive, not piecemeal.
