Zoom Announces Next-Generation Modem
Boston, MA, May 24, 1999 -- Zoom Telephonics, Inc.
(NASDAQ: ZOOM) in concert with Lucent Technologies Microelectronics
Group, has announced it will soon ship a consumer-market modem
which supports Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) protocols. Zoom's
client-side DSL device will deliver an affordable and flexible
transition to high-speed DSL communications by also providing
a V.90 56K analog modem on the same PCI-format card. The new
Zoom modem is expected to be available by year's end.
Zoom's product will allow data download speeds of up to 1.5
megabits per second and data upload speeds of up to 384K bits
per second over ordinary telephone lines using the ITU G.992.2
(G.Lite) protocol. The product is based on the Lucent WildWire™
DSP1690 chip set from Lucent Technologies Microelectronics
Group. "We believe that DSL will be a very high-volume
category of product in the near future. Service providers
will widely deploy G.Lite DSL and Zoom will be supporting
that deployment on the client side with both our Zoom and
Hayes brands," said Terry Manning, Vice President of
Sales and Marketing for Zoom Telephonics. Zoom recently acquired
most of Hayes' modem assets. "This announcement
marks one of the first client DSL offerings in the channel,"
said Surinder Rai, Lucent's Director of Marketing. "Zoom
has been a key partner with us on our 'Lucent Edge' modem
campaign and is now taking client side communications to the
next level by announcing support for a DSL offering."
