Zoom® Ships ZoomAir 11 Mbps Wireless LAN Products
Boston, MA, November 7, 2000 -- Zoom Telephonics Inc.
(NASDAQ: ZOOM)
is now shipping a suite of ZoomAir 11 Mbps wireless Local
Area Networking products. The products include wireless network
interface cards (NICs) conforming to the popular IEEE 802.11b
standard and a software access point that bridges between
a wired and wireless network. ZoomAir can be used
with a wired network or as a totally wireless LAN solution,
and provides flexible, portable access to wired LANs and the
Internet. The ZoomAir Model 4100 PC Card NIC plugs
into a standard Type II PCMCIA slot and makes any Windows
95, 98, Me, 2000 or NT4 laptop PC into a high-speed and secure
wireless networked workstation. The Model 4100 is equipped
with an integrated dual diversity antenna. The ZoomAir
Model 4105 NIC for desktop computers includes a ZoomAir PC
Card, a PCI adapter for use of the PC card in a desktop computer,
and a detachable dipole antenna. Optional ZoomAir antennas
can be used with the Model 4105 to extend the range of a wireless
network. ZoomAir Access Point Software Model 4110
connects a ZoomAir wireless LAN to a wired Ethernet network,
provides shared access to a single Internet WAN connection,
enhances network security, and extends the range of a ZoomAir
wireless LAN. ZoomAir Access Point Software can replace more
expensive hardware access points in smaller networks.
"Affordable, high-speed wireless LANs are an important
part of our broadband strategy," said Terry Manning,
Zoom's Vice-President of Sales and Marketing. "We believe
a significant number of DSL and cable modems users will want
the convenience, ease of installation and flexibility of these
new high-speed ZoomAir products." The 11 Mbps
ZoomAir NICs and ZoomAir Access Point Software have passed
the rigorous testing of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility
Alliance (WECA). They have demonstrated interoperability with
IEEE 802.11b 11 Mbps wireless networking products from other
manufacturers and can carry the "Wi-Fi" logo. According
to WECA, the "Wi-Fi" logo "represents proven
technology and offers wireless connectivity at speeds up to
11 Mbps." ZoomAir NICs include intelligent power
control with a power-saving standby mode to maximize laptop
battery life. The circuitry is also designed to withstand
power-up voltages that can damage competing products. Network
security is provided with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP),
that provides 40 and 128-bit data encryption. Zoom's
wireless LAN products are also equipped with flash memory
for easy upgrades. A software "installation wizard"
makes setup of an 11 Mbps ZoomAir wireless LAN fast and easy.
